What is Next?

Hello gamedevs and gamers. I wanted to write this post to talk about my process, design decisions and where I am trying to go in the future.

If you read the devlog titled 0.0, you'll know that this Protype 0.0 that I keep referring to, oftentimes simply as 0.0, is my first phase in the development of this game. The "very" alpha prototype for which I am inviting testers to join in and help craft a game and experience worth giving to you.

I have plans for what I intend to add, however in this phase I am seeking your feedback and critique early on, especially of the gameplay feel and core game loops. In this critical period of development, as the root of the game is being conceived, your input could make this game better than it would have ever been without it. I am still open to getting more testers on board and if you are interested, please do comment on one of my pages or drop by on discord to let me know. I'd be glad to have you.

In fact, I will make a brief section just to explain what you will be doing and what you will get if you decide to join.

Testers

Testers are crucial to the success of any game and as such there is a special place for you.

Tasks

As a tester expect to do these tasks:

  • Test out new mechanics and provide feedback on jank, feasibility and areas that need improvement
  • Try to break the game, exposing crucial design flaws
  • If possible, stream the game live with me during which time I will not provide commentary in order to see what is intuitive or not within the design

Perks

As gratitude to you for testing the game, you will receive these perks:

  • First people to play new builds
  • Ability to request features
  • Ability to request items within reason to the game world
  • A mention in the credits for the game
  • A personal role in discord @theTesters, complete with a tester's lounge and tester's chat room

Comment on my game page or contact me on Discord via my server/DM if you would like to discuss becoming a tester.

What is going to be in store this Month?

Alright, during this month, I will be adding some major updates, hoping to be able to release a new demo version by March. If all goes according to plan, I will add a bunch of ui and get the audio system up and running. On top of that, if the previous tasks do not take all month, I will try to add in a few missions with combat and enemies, as well as the team mechanics and level up system. My code needs its periodic clean up as well so that will be done too.

My Process

My current process is as follows:

  • 1 Devlog post every other day, to keep you up to date and to get other potential customers to see this game and create traction
  • Add a Quick Patch at least once a week
  • Take some time to add/brush up game features daily
  • Tweet once or twice about the game and development progress on Twitter each day
  • Test the game
  • Release new build

Consistency will be key to building up a following and if you like this game, please do spread the word. Every little thing helps.

Solo Development

I understand that solo development is not easy and that I am making games on outdated systems (Windows XP), however the journey has its own thrill which I personally enjoy. I often think about getting members on the team but due to financial constraints and my current operating system, it would be very difficult to coordinate a team well.

I am still nevertheless dedicated to providing a unique and special experience to you guys regardless of the odds that I face. During development, I may turn to other tiny projects in order to gain more supporters, such as revamping "The Wormhole".

Potentially, the hardest part of solo development is everything hinges on me being able to work on it and remaining healthy, both physically and mentally. If I don't do anything, nothing gets done basically. Despite this, I will work hard to maintain momentum, while searching for work and getting ready for college. Thanks to those who support me, I will be able to keep going because of you.
